SEB raised the availability and reliability of its digital banking services with our help

SEB has made a significant change to its IT infrastructure, taking the largest and most modern data center in the Baltics into use to serve its customers better. The aim was to modernise the bank's IT architecture, the foundation on which the banking systems accessed over the web and by phone rest. For customers it means, above all, greater reliability.

"This step strengthens the day-to-day availability of banking services, which makes life easier for merchants and consumers alike. Banking services are available to our customers when the IT equipment behind them is kept securely and reliably and is well connected to the various server rooms across the Baltics," said Andrus Tamm, Head of Product Development and Technology at SEB, explaining the move to the Greenergy Data Centers facility. SEB's IT infrastructure serving the Baltics is spread across several data centers. With the addition of Greenergy Data Centers an older location was replaced, which on balance increases future resilience.

SEB's cooperation with the Baltics' largest data center began before the building was even built. "That is one of the reasons the bar was set very high. Estonia did not simply need a new data center; it needed a complex meeting the highest international standards that would support the growth of local businesses and give them a solid backbone," explained Tõnu Grünberg, CEO of Greenergy Data Centers.

The only data center in the Baltics and Finland built and certified to the EN 50600 standard took the financial sector's strict requirements for security, reliability and energy efficiency into account from the very start of planning and construction. High fences and dozens of cameras around the data center, and constant armed security and biometric identification inside the building, speak to that. SEB has added a further security layer of its own. Redundant power and cooling systems help prevent interruptions to the servers behind banking services. Estonia's first large-scale data center was also built with the smallest possible ecological footprint in mind.

"We understand perfectly well that people expect round-the-clock availability. Online banking has to be constantly online, and taking a new data center into use is yet another step to ensure that," Tamm added.

Greenergy Data Centers is the largest, most secure and most energy-efficient data center in the Baltics. The first building holds equipment covering the area of two football pitches, and the complex's electricity connections could power an average Estonian town. The construction of the Greenergy Data Centers facility outside Tallinn was financed by the Three Seas Initiative Investment Fund, whose investors include the Republic of Estonia.
